Closet Organization is one challenge many people have a hard time conquering. The closet is usually the biggest issue and the last place you want to spend time organizing – after all, who really sees your closet, right? You do, that’s who!
Keeping your closet organized reduces stress and make your days more efficient. Let’s be honest, how much time have you wasted trying to find a specific article of clothing in your closet?
Here are 6 great tips to help you achieve organizational bliss.
The first rule for organizational bliss is to tidy by category. For example, deal with every single one of your books at once – otherwise they’ll continue to creep around your house and you’ll never reign in the clutter. Beginning with clothing is the best way to start since it’s the least emotionally loaded of one’s belongings, but books should come next and old photographs much later.
It is important here to put blinders on and focus only on the category of stuff at hand. Read one old letter and suddenly you’re down a rabbit hole of nostalgia. So get strict with yourself. Don’t become distracted from the task at hand. If you need get someone to be your “check-point Charlie”, arrange for a friend or family member to call you part way through your task to make sure you stay on track.
So here’s a great way to get through it efficiently. Gather every piece of your clothing and put it in one giant pile. It is a lot more fun than you might think. As you go through your pile and work out what to keep, give way or trash. Ask yourself what items bring you joy? This question of joy gives you permission to let go of off-color shirts bought on sale, dresses past their prime, skirts that always clung uncomfortably. You will feel 12 times lighter when you do this. It is also good karma: especially if you donate your unwanted items to a charity or thrift store.
Once you’ve cleared away the clutter and organized your clothes, all your favorite and loved items can now see the light of day. There’s breathing room between pieces, so you no longer have to do that awkward wrestle to get to find the things you want to wear. Whether you’re getting ready in the morning or planning a party ensemble – all of which means you get a hit of joy in just opening your closet.
If you’ve worn the same rotation of easy-to-grab, reliable pieces of clothing without dipping into all the colors and styles that may have been hiding deep in the burrows of your closet, then this is where you get to rediscover those things that brought you joy. Perhaps you have a weakness for turquoise that seemed to disappeared in the swirling soup of your closet. Or you have a love for silky colorful scarves but they faded into the background along with all your other long lost favorites in the daily race to get out the door. Now you can rediscover your personal style once more and even enhance it with some new pieces.
This might be the best payoff of all: After going through this entire process and having potentially looked at hundreds of things and asked yourself if they give you joy or fill a practical need, your decision-making gets a WHOLE lot easier: Even with simple things like which book to read, which projects to pursue, what to make for dinner, whether to say yes or no to the many optional obligations that come our way. With this skill mastered you are well on your way to experiencing bliss in some way each and every day.
